What should I do if the airline loses my luggage?
If your bag does not arrive on the baggage carousel:
1. Report it immediately: Go to the airline's baggage services desk before leaving the airport — do NOT go home and call later. You need to file a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) in person.
2. Get your PIR number: This is your claim reference. Keep it safe.
3. Provide a description: Bag type, colour, brand, and any unique identifiers.
- Know your rights:
• Under the Montreal Convention, you are entitled to compensation for delayed, lost, or damaged baggage
• For international flights: approximately USD $1,700 per passenger
• For EU flights: airlines must deliver delayed bags within 21 days or declare them lost
5. Claim interim expenses: If your bag is delayed, most airlines reimburse essential purchases (toiletries, basic clothing) — keep all receipts and get pre-approval if possible.
6. Track your bag: Use the airline's baggage tracking tool online with your PIR number.
7. If not found after 21 days: Your bag is officially declared lost and you can claim compensation.
