Singapore Airlines' history begins in 1947 when Malayan Airways Limited (MAL) launched scheduled services between Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh, and Penang using Airspeed Consul aircraft. The airline operated as a joint venture between the British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC), Australian National Airways, and local interests. Following Malayan independence, the airline was renamed Malaysia-Singapore Airlines (MSA) in 1966 to reflect the joint ownership of both newly independent nations. When commercial tensions between Singapore and Malaysia made a joint airline unworkable, MSA was split in November 1972 into Malaysia Airlines System (MAS) and Singapore Airlines (SIA) — with Singapore Airlines beginning operations on October 1, 1972.

From its very first flights as an independent carrier, Singapore Airlines pursued an explicit strategy of product differentiation through service excellence, investing in the most modern aircraft, the finest cabin products, and the most rigorous customer service training. The airline was among the first to introduce personal in-seat entertainment screens (1991), the first to fly the Airbus A380 commercially (October 25, 2007, Singapore-Sydney), and the first to introduce the A350-900ULR for ultra-long-range non-stop operations (Singapore-Newark, October 2018 — the world's longest commercial flight). Singapore Airlines' cabin crew — instantly recognizable in their iconic sarong kebaya uniforms designed by French couturier Pierre Balmain — are considered among the most professional in global aviation, a reputation built over five decades. The airline recovered strongly from COVID-19 and has consistently generated record profits in subsequent years.

In 2023, Air India agreed to acquire 25.1% of Air India from Tata Group with Singapore Airlines acquiring a 25.1% stake — deepening SIA's footprint in the world's fastest-growing aviation market.
