British Airways

British Airways was created on March 31, 1974, when the British government merged four airline entities — British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC), British European Airways (BEA), and two regional carriers, Cambrian Airways and Northeast Airlines — into a single national carrier. However, British Airways' heritage extends far deeper into aviation history through its constituent airlines: BOAC traces its origins to Imperial Airways, founded in 1924 as the British government's first subsidized airline, while BEA was established in 1946 to operate European and domestic routes. BOAC operated some of aviation's most iconic services, including Concorde development, the first commercial transatlantic jet service, and pioneering routes to Asia and Africa that shaped global air travel patterns for decades. British Airways was privatized by the Thatcher government in February 1987, with the initial share offering nine times oversubscribed — one of the most successful privatizations in British economic history.

Under CEO Colin Marshall's direction in the 1980s, the airline was transformed from a loss-making state enterprise into one of the world's most profitable carriers, famously claiming to be "The World's Favourite Airline." In 1999, BA co-founded the oneworld alliance. On January 21, 2011, British Airways merged with Iberia to create International Airlines Group (IAG) — one of the world's largest airline groups — which has since grown to include Aer Lingus, Vueling, and Level. In October 2020, Sean Doyle was appointed CEO, taking charge of the airline's post-pandemic recovery. Under IAG's ownership, British Airways has invested heavily in fleet modernization, introducing the Club Suite business class product that has received widespread passenger acclaim for its privacy and comfort.
