Wizz Air

Wizz Air was founded on September 19, 2003 by a team led by József Váradi, who had previously worked at Malév Hungarian Airlines. Indigo Partners provided the initial capital. The airline launched commercial service in May 2004 between Katowice (Poland) and London Luton — a route that immediately resonated with Poland's large diaspora community in the UK. Wizz Air's timing was impeccable: Poland and nine other Central and Eastern European countries joined the EU in May 2004, which simultaneously created freedom of movement for their citizens and opened aviation markets to EU-wide competition.

The airline grew explosively, establishing bases across Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine, and other Central European countries. Wizz Air went public on the London Stock Exchange in February 2015, raising £255 million to fund further expansion. The airline launched Wizz Air Abu Dhabi in January 2021 — a new subsidiary operating from Abu Dhabi International Airport targeting the Gulf market. Wizz Air's aggressive post-COVID expansion strategy — launching new routes and bases faster than any other European carrier — generated both impressive growth and significant operational strain, including severe punctuality issues during the 2022 travel recovery period.

The airline has invested heavily in improving operational reliability while maintaining its cost leadership.
