GOL Linhas Aereas

GOL Transportes Aéreos was founded in 2000 by Constantino de Oliveira Junior, whose family had built the Grupo Comporte bus transportation empire. Drawing explicit inspiration from Southwest Airlines's low-cost model, GOL was designed from inception as a no-frills carrier that would democratize Brazilian domestic air travel. GOL launched commercial service on January 15, 2001 with an initial network of routes connecting São Paulo, Brasília, Porto Alegre, and Florianópolis. The timing proved prescient: GOL launched just as Brazil's economy was recovering and a growing middle class was aspirationally interested in air travel but deterred by the high fares of incumbents Varig, VASP, and Transbrasil.

GOL's ultra-low fares triggered a price war that ultimately drove all three of those legacy carriers out of business within a few years, cementing GOL's position alongside TAM (later LATAM) as a duopoly in Brazilian aviation. GOL went public on both the São Paulo and New York stock exchanges in June 2004. The airline merged with Varig in 2007, acquiring the historic but financially ruined carrier primarily for its international route certificates and brand recognition. GOL joined SkyTeam in 2012.

The Brazilian aviation market's structural challenges — high operating costs, fuel taxes, infrastructure bottlenecks, and currency volatility — have made sustained profitability elusive for GOL despite its dominant market position.
