Flight cancelled? Need to change your plans? Here's how to navigate airline refund policies and get your money back.
When You're Entitled to a Refund
Airlines MUST refund you for:
- Cancelled flights (full refund, no questions asked)
- Significant schedule changes (varies by airline, usually 2+ hours)
- Significant delay (6+ hours for most carriers)
- Class downgrade (refund the fare difference)
Refund vs. Travel Credit
Airlines often push travel credits, but you can insist on a refund if the airline cancelled or significantly changed your flight. Under DOT rules in the US, they must provide a cash refund to your original payment method.
How to Request a Refund
- Document everything (screenshot your booking, emails)
- Call the airline's customer service
- Be persistent but polite
- If denied, file a complaint with DOT (US) or relevant aviation authority
- Credit card chargeback as last resort
Refund Timelines
Airlines are required to process refunds within:
- 7 days for credit card payments
- 20 days for cash/check payments
Non-Refundable Tickets
Even "non-refundable" tickets may qualify for refunds if the airline cancels. You're always entitled to a refund for airline-initiated cancellations, regardless of ticket type.
